Honeysuckle Heat
chickadees and cardinals
scrabble and hop
away from wind’s sharp sting
breaking open silence
on short winter days
with chirps chitters scolds
and the brushed crackle
of twigs and dead weeds
pause as you walk
but don’t disturb
the colony on the hillside
where year round birds
seek protection
in a tangle of branches
evergreen vines
and honeysuckle heat
